Growing Old

Thursday 8th September 2022
Andalus

Unity Family Services held a thought-provoking and heartwarming event at the Andalus Lecture Theatre, Glasgow, exploring the important theme of Growing Old. The evening brought together community members to reflect on ageing, the challenges it presents, and how we can prepare for this stage of life with dignity, compassion, and wisdom.

We were honoured to welcome three insightful speakers who each offered a unique perspective on ageing:

      •     Shaykh Amer Jamil – shared spiritual reflections on ageing, emphasising gratitude, purpose, and maintaining strong connections with family and community.

      •     Dr Matthew Sheridan – Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist, who provided valuable medical insights into the physical and mental health challenges that come with ageing, including dementia and emotional wellbeing.

      •     Jasmin Roshan – Social Worker, who highlighted the practical and social aspects of caring for the elderly, addressing community support, independence, and the importance of safeguarding dignity.

The evening touched on some of the most vital questions surrounding ageing:

      •     How do we prepare ourselves and our families for this stage of life?

      •     What medical and psychological challenges should we be aware of?

      •     How can society support the elderly with compassion and respect?

      •     What role does faith and spirituality play in navigating later life?

Attendees appreciated the holistic approach – blending medical, social, and spiritual perspectives. Many expressed that the session opened their eyes to the importance of preparing not only practically but also emotionally and spiritually for the later stages of life.

It was also a reminder of the responsibility we carry towards our elders, ensuring they feel valued, cared for, and respected.

Unity Family Services is committed to continuing these important conversations within our community. The evening was a beautiful reminder that ageing is not just a personal journey, but a collective one – where families and communities come together to provide love, care, and support.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our speakers and everyone who attended for making this event so meaningful.
