In collaboration with BIMA and Macmillan Cancer Support
Unity Family Services, in collaboration with the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) and Macmillan Cancer Support, proudly hosted the online event “What is Cancer Screening?” – an insightful and impactful session focused on raising awareness about the importance of cancer screening.
This free virtual session brought together a diverse audience keen to learn more about the early detection of cancers that are most common in the UK, including breast, lung, cervical, bowel, and prostate cancer.

Our attendees were fortunate to hear from two outstanding speakers:
- Dr. Rehmatullah Khan – A Medical Oncology Trainee, who shared vital medical insights and practical information on the science behind cancer screening, demystifying medical terms and procedures in an accessible and engaging way.
- Iqra Ali – A third-year medical student from Edinburgh Medical School, who brought a fresh and community-focused perspective, encouraging participants to engage in their healthcare journey with confidence and awareness.
A truly moving highlight of the event was hearing from Rubina, a cancer survivor who shared her deeply personal journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Her story, titled “Searching for Humans”, reminded us of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of community, compassion, and education. Her strength, positivity, and honesty left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
The response to the event has been overwhelmingly positive. Comments from attendees highlighted how informative, moving, and beneficial the session was. This feedback reinforces the importance of events like these in promoting health awareness and emotional support in our communities.
